marital rights

marital rights
copulation by a man with his wife
In the days when this phrase was used seriously, the sexual meaning transcended the economic and other rights which a husband acquired over his wife and her possessions when they married. Both lay and ecclesiastical law held that it was a woman's duty to copulate with her husband on request, even at the risk of dangerous, debilitating, and unwanted pregnancies. Today the phrase is used only by husbands with willing wives and a dated sense of humour.
