lovemaking

lovemaking
   copulation
Originally it implied no more than courtship:
Christopher, in lovemaking, as in most things, would pursue methods unknown to her. (Somerville and Ross, 1894Christopher was someone who would not have read, let alone put into practice, lessons from the Kama Sutra)
Now it refers only to copulation:
    Rachman's love-making was clinical and joyless. (S. Green, 1979)
