When the railroad arrived, it was often located on the edge of town where property was cheaper, and it could be placed downwind of nouses to minimize smoke, noise, and fire hazards. Eventually the town would develop around the station, with the richer inhabitants staying in the more salubrious quarter and the poorer living on the other side of the tracks. Now also some figurative use.
